Evaluation of echinacea for the prevention and treatment of the common cold: a meta-analysis.: Lancet Infect Dis. 2007 Jul; 7(7): 473-80 Shah SA, Sander S, White CM, Rinaldi M, Coleman CI

Echinacea is one of the most commonly used herbal products, but controversy exists about its benefit in the prevention and treatment of the common cold. Thus, we did a meta-analysis evaluating the effect of echinacea on the incidence and duration of the common cold. 14 unique studies were included in the meta-analysis. Incidence of the common cold was reported as an odds ratio (OR) with 95% CI, and duration of the common cold was reported as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% CI. Weighted averages and mean differences were calculated by a random-effects model (DerSimonian-Laird methodology). Heterogeneity was assessed by the Q statistic and review of L'Abbé plots, and publication bias was assessed through the Egger weighted regression statistic and visual inspection of funnel plots. Echinacea decreased the odds of developing the common cold by 58% (OR 0.42; 95% CI 0.25-0.71; Q statistic p<0.001) and the duration of a cold by 1.4 days (WMD -1.44, -2.24 to -0.64; p=0.01). Similarly, significant reductions were maintained in subgroup analyses limited to Echinaguard/Echinacin use, concomitant supplement use, method of cold exposure, Jadad scores less than 3, or use of a fixed-effects model. Published evidence supports echinacea's benefit in decreasing the incidence and duration of the common cold.

Treatment of metabolic acidosis should, if possible, be superimposed on measures designed to control the basic cause of the acidosis - e.g. insulin in uncomplicated diabetes, blood volume restoration in shock. But since an appreciable time interval may elapse before all of the ancillary effects are brought about, bicarbonate therapy is indicated to minimize risks inherent to the acidosis itself.

Vigorous bicarbonate therapy is required in any form of metabolic acidosis where a rapid increase in plasma total CO2 content is crucial † e.g. cardiac arrest, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration , and in severe primary lactic acidosis or severe diabetic acidosis.

This time, the game is to make sure that you cannot learn what supplements are right for you, in what dose and for what conditions. The FDA's newest game, the "Evidence-Based Review System for the  Scientific Evaluation of Health Claims", Docket 2007D-0125, http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/hclmgui5.html, is designed to raise the bar so high on information about what supplements can do, their health benefits, that, as the guidance says, small and medium sized supplement companies will be driven out of business.  That is the intent.  The big companies remain, for a while.  The small, innovative, personally owned companies are burdened and blanked out of  business.

This strategy violates US legislation AND US Supreme Court decisions (case law).  In the public comment we are urging you to send to the FDA  (hyper link to http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/healthfreedomusa/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=12189) those violations are spelled out.  Briefly, the 1994 Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act, DSHEA, says that supplements are foods and foods are generally regarded as safe.  Dangerous supplements can be removed from the market. All others are to be left alone.

The Supreme Court said that the FDA MAY NOT control information to keep people from doing what they want to and what the FDA does not want them to - in this case, know about supplements and buy them.

You may recall that in my lecture "Nutricide" I defined Nutricide as:
1. The death of a body of knowledge about the health benefits of food and
2. The death of large numbers of people through manipulation of the food supply.

This Guidance is Definition No. 1, pure and simple.  Codex and the hundreds of thousands of iatrogenic (doctor-caused) deaths through permitting known killer-drugs on the market is Definition No. 2, also pure and simple.

That's what a study led by a Purdue University researcher found in evaluating data on personality change and mortality in 1,663 men ages 43 to 91. During 18 years of follow-up, men who became increasingly neurotic had a much higher risk of dying than those who stayed the same or became less neurotic. The good news, says Robert S. Wilson, professor of neuropsychology at Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago, is that change-learning to cope and overcoming the tendency to stew over things-"seems to make a difference, and that's pretty exciting." The study was published in May's Psychological Science.

Trevor Walker, a biochemist with the research firm Alzeim, in Powys, Wales, told the BBC that he hopes to produce a less costly generic version of the compound.

The Food and Drug Administration said it approved Letairis (ambrisentan) to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The condition causes continuous high blood pressure in the arteries that carry oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs. As the arteries narrow, the heart must pump harder, which weakens it with time. The disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States.

The drug comes with strong warnings as it may cause birth defects and shouldn't be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. It also can cause liver damage. Patients taking the once-daily tablets must undergo monthly blood tests to check for injury to the liver, the FDA said. (AP) 

Drinking a milkshake-style medicine at breakfast seems to feed brain cells starved from Alzheimer's damage, researchers reported Monday. It's one of four promising experimental drugs poised for large-scale testing against the brain-destroying disease. The milkshake drug, called Ketasyn, is a dramatically different way to approach dementia. It hinges on recent research suggesting diabetic-like changes in brain cells' ability to use sugar for energy play a role in at least some forms of Alzheimer's. WASHINGTON (AP)

U.S. researchers say antioxidants may reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapy. The report, which is to be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago next week, said antioxidants may improve survival rates and tumor response by helping patients complete prescribed treatment cycles, The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment said Friday in a release. In 18 of 30 studies evaluated, patients who received oral or intravenous antioxidant supplements experienced significantly lower toxicity. The report said glutathione, melatonin and vitamin E showed the most consistent and promising effects. Vitamin A was the only antioxidant that showed significantly greater toxicity. Dr. Keith I. Block, co-founder and medical/scientific director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment, was the lead author. Robert Newman, Professor of Cancer Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, co-wrote the report.

Study: Vitamin D may cut the risk of several types of cancer by 60 percent overall for older women. The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight's ultraviolet rays. When a UK professor of molecular biology and biotechnology tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells, he discovered that it was damaging important DNA in the cells' mitochondria.

Mitochondria serve as the "power stations" for cells, and damage to them can lead to serious cell malfunctions associated with aging and age-related disease. The damage caused by sodium benzoate was great enough to cause the mitochondria to stop functioning.

At 85, it's 1 in 2. And 85+ is the largest growing segment of our population.

New York Post: June 10, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - More than 26 million people worldwide have Alzheimer's disease, and a new forecast says the number will quadruple by 2050...

At that rate, one in 85 people will have the brain-destroying disease in 40 years, researchers from Johns Hopkins University conclude... But the same forecast significantly lowers the estimate of current and future U.S. Alzheimer's patients.

A recent U.S. study estimated that the nation's Alzheimer's toll will reach 16 million by 2050, compared with more than 5 million today. The new estimate suggests only 3.1 million North American cases today and 8.8 million by 2050.

The biggest jump is projected for densely populated Asia, home of almost half of today's Alzheimer's cases, 12.6 million. By 2050, Asia will have 62.8 million of the world's 106 million Alzheimer's patients, the study projects.

SOFT DRINKS: Research from a British university suggests that sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA. This could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's.

When a UK professor of molecular biology and biotechnology tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells, he discovered that it was damaging important DNA in the cells' mitochondria.

Mitochondria serve as the "power stations" for cells, and damage to them can lead to serious cell malfunctions associated with aging and age-related disease. The damage caused by sodium benzoate was great enough to cause the mitochondria to stop functioning.

Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in berries in small amounts, but is used in large quantities to prevent mold in soft drinks such as Sprite, Diet Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

Concerns centre on the safety of E211, known as sodium benzoate, a preservative used for decades by the £74bn global carbonated drinks industry. Sodium benzoate derives from benzoic acid. It occurs naturally in berries, but is used in large quantities to prevent mould in soft drinks such as Sprite, Oasis and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

Sodium benzoate has already been the subject of concern about cancer because when mixed with the additive vitamin C in soft drinks, it causes benzene, a carcinogenic substance. A Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks last year found high levels in four brands which were removed from sale.
