Evaluation of echinacea for the prevention and treatment of the common cold: a meta-analysis.: Lancet Infect Dis. 2007 Jul; 7(7): 473-80 Shah SA, Sander S, White CM, Rinaldi M, Coleman CI
Echinacea is one of the most commonly used herbal products, but controversy exists about its benefit in the prevention and treatment of the common cold. Thus, we did a meta-analysis evaluating the effect of echinacea on the incidence and duration of the common cold. 14 unique studies were included in the meta-analysis. Incidence of the common cold was reported as an odds ratio (OR) with 95% CI, and duration of the common cold was reported as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% CI. Weighted averages and mean differences were calculated by a random-effects model (DerSimonian-Laird methodology). Heterogeneity was assessed by the Q statistic and review of L'Abbé plots, and publication bias was assessed through the Egger weighted regression statistic and visual inspection of funnel plots. Echinacea decreased the odds of developing the common cold by 58% (OR 0.42; 95% CI 0.25-0.71; Q statistic p<0.001) and the duration of a cold by 1.4 days (WMD -1.44, -2.24 to -0.64; p=0.01). Similarly, significant reductions were maintained in subgroup analyses limited to Echinaguard/Echinacin use, concomitant supplement use, method of cold exposure, Jadad scores less than 3, or use of a fixed-effects model. Published evidence supports echinacea's benefit in decreasing the incidence and duration of the common cold.

Treatment of metabolic acidosis should, if possible, be superimposed on measures designed to control the basic cause of the acidosis - e.g. insulin in uncomplicated diabetes, blood volume restoration in shock. But since an appreciable time interval may elapse before all of the ancillary effects are brought about, bicarbonate therapy is indicated to minimize risks inherent to the acidosis itself.
Vigorous bicarbonate therapy is required in any form of metabolic acidosis where a rapid increase in plasma total CO2 content is crucial † e.g. cardiac arrest, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration , and in severe primary lactic acidosis or severe diabetic acidosis.

This strategy violates US legislation AND US Supreme Court decisions (case law). Briefly, the 1994 Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act, DSHEA, says that supplements are foods and foods are generally regarded as safe. Dangerous supplements can be removed from the market. The Supreme Court said that the FDA MAY NOT control information to keep people from doing what they want to and what the FDA does not want them to - in this case, know about supplements and buy them.

That's what a study led by a Purdue University researcher found in evaluating data on personality change and mortality in 1,663 men ages 43 to 91. During 18 years of follow-up, men who became increasingly neurotic had a much higher risk of dying than those who stayed the same or became less neurotic. The good news, says Robert S. Wilson, professor of neuropsychology at Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago, is that change-learning to cope and overcoming the tendency to stew over things-"seems to make a difference, and that's pretty exciting." The study was published in May's Psychological Science.

The LifeStraw is an instant water purification filter designed by the Danish Vestergaard Frandsen Group.[1]. The device is able to clean bacteria, such as typhoid, salmonella, Escherichia coli, and cholera, from water for people living in third world countries[2].
Construction: The LifeStraw is a plastic tube 25 centimeters long and 29 millimeters in diameter[3], and costs around $2.00[4]. Water that is sucked through the straw first passes through a mesh of 100-micrometer spaces, then through a mesh of 15-micrometer spaces. Water then passes through a chamber with iodine-coated beads, killing remaining bacteria. The water passes through an empty chamber, then finally passes through active carbon, removing the iodide taste and medium-sized bacteria.[5] The entire process is powered by regular sucking, similar to using a conventional drinking straw, and filters up to 700 liters of water.[6] The filter currently does not work against Giardia lamblia, but the company is working on that. The Food and Drug Administration said it approved Letairis (ambrisentan) to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The condition causes continuous high blood pressure in the arteries that carry oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs. As the arteries narrow, the heart must pump harder, which weakens it with time. The disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States.
The drug comes with strong warnings as it may cause birth defects and shouldn't be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. It also can cause liver damage. Patients taking the once-daily tablets must undergo monthly blood tests to check for injury to the liver, the FDA said. (AP)
Drinking a milkshake-style medicine at breakfast seems to feed brain cells starved from Alzheimer's damage, researchers reported Monday. It's one of four promising experimental drugs poised for large-scale testing against the brain-destroying disease. The milkshake drug, called Ketasyn, is a dramatically different way to approach dementia. It hinges on recent research suggesting diabetic-like changes in brain cells' ability to use sugar for energy play a role in at least some forms of Alzheimer's. WASHINGTON (AP)
U.S. researchers say antioxidants may reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapy. The report, which is to be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago next week, said antioxidants may improve survival rates and tumor response by helping patients complete prescribed treatment cycles, The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment said Friday in a release. In 18 of 30 studies evaluated, patients who received oral or intravenous antioxidant supplements experienced significantly lower toxicity. The report said glutathione, melatonin and vitamin E showed the most consistent and promising effects. Vitamin A was the only antioxidant that showed significantly greater toxicity. Dr. Keith I. Block, co-founder and medical/scientific director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment, was the lead author. Robert Newman, Professor of Cancer Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, co-wrote the report.

Study: Vitamin D may cut the risk of several types of cancer by 60 percent overall for older women. The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight's ultraviolet rays. When a UK professor of molecular biology and biotechnology tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells, he discovered that it was damaging important DNA in the cells' mitochondria.
Mitochondria serve as the "power stations" for cells, and damage to them can lead to serious cell malfunctions associated with aging and age-related disease. The damage caused by sodium benzoate was great enough to cause the mitochondria to stop functioning.
Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in berries in small amounts, but is used in large quantities to prevent mold in soft drinks such as Sprite, Diet Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

Type 2 diabetes is a very serious health hazard because of the complications it can cause. These complications, which include heart attack and stroke, cause people with type 2 diabetes to have twice the risk of premature death as non-diabetics. Diabetes also can lead to disability through blindness, amputations, heart disease, stroke, and nerve damage. Four to six out of every 100 people with type 2 diabetes become dependent upon dialysis treatments because of kidney failure.

Heart Risks of Diabetes Drug
A popular drug for type 2 diabetes may carry a risk of heart attacks and death. An analysis published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that people taking rosiglitazone, sold as Avandia, had a 43% higher risk of having a heart attack compared to people taking other drugs or no drugs. Avandia users also appeared to have a higher risk of dying from heart problems -- on top of the already elevated risk of heart-related death seen in people with diabetes. The analysis pooled results of studies involving a total of nearly 28,000 people. The studies were not looking for heart problems, and many were short term, so the researchers say the the long-term heart risks could be higher. The CAM Guidance, which Dr. Ron Paul (R-TX) calls "an abuse of FDA power", is poised to turn all natural health practices into treatments that only licensed physicians can perform (by defining CAM as "Complementary and Alternative Medicine") and turn all items and substances used with with the intent to produce healthful effects into untested medical devices and drugs (overriding and rendering protective laws like DSHEA* irrelevant -- long an FDA goal). By the way, as a physician, let me point out that when doctors use CAM procedures instead of drugs, they frequently are "disciplined" by the pharma-dominated State Medical Boards and often loose their licenses for it!

Equally important, tell the House of Representatives to protect your health from the dangerous of a "REVITALIZED" FDA as legislated into existence by Senator Kennedy's ill advised and dangerous legislation S. 1082, the FDA Revitalization Act of 2007. Passed by the Congress on May 9 with no public comment and precious little Senate debate, this bill makes and already corrupt and dangerous federal agency even more corrupt and dangerous. Only the House of Representatives stands between the havoc which an even more drug-company friendly FDA, even more dependant on rushing drugs to market despite their clear dangers. Just look at the deaths and suffering causes by Vioxx (now approved for use in children!) , Avienda, Zyprexa, Baycol, etc., etc., to see how bad it is now. Look at the deaths caused by Gardasil the "safe" vaccine for children and girls to "protect" them from HPV-related cervical cancer.
Now imagine what a "Revitalized" -- read "even more out of control, industry subservient" -- FDA will mean to you and your loved ones. Properly used drugs are already the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Imaging what happens when the FDA is even more out of control, even more dependent on drug company "User fees" and under even more industry pressure to release more drugs to the public with even less safety testing AND takes on the role of a private drug company as well .
