MAD COW: The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease . The Agriculture Department tests less than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. But Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to test all of its cows. Larger meat companies feared that move because, if Creekstone tested its meat and advertised it as safe, they might have to perform the expensive test, too.
Iraq - May was the deadliest month for Washington's service members since the Iraq war began in March 2003, with 23 deaths reported as of May 29, 2007
of the jury and settling in Merisant Co. v. McNeil Nutritionals. The case called into question Johnson & Johnson's motives behind the marketing slogan "Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar" and whether they were aware it was leading consumers to believe that Splenda is somehow natural, or more natural than other artificial sweeteners.
Reader's Question: In Organic Bytes #107 you wrote about the USDA passing a
new regulation that will require almonds to be pasteurized even though they
may be labeled "raw". I understand the public comment period is over, but
I'd still like to let the USDA know how I feel about this. Can you help?
OCA's Response: We've received a lot of emails and phone calls from our
readers on this issue. The USDA approved this regulation with little public
notification. As a result, the only comments the agency received were from
the industrial agriculture lobbyists. One of the FDA-recommended
pasteurization methods requires the use of propylene oxide, which is
classified as a "possible human carcinogen". Organic and family-scale almond
farmers are protesting the proposed rule, saying it will effectively put
them out of business, since the minimum price for the pasteurization
equipment is $500,000. We feel this issue is too important to let rest.

Chicken poop: More glamorous than ever
A tale of farmers, fertilizer and the future's insatiable demand for
excrement. by Andrew Leonard
May. 30, 2007 | The price of nitrogen-based fertilizer is soaring in the
United States. In just a few months urea prices have jumped as much as 50
percent. There are two main reasons. The first: Most commercially available
nitrogen-based fertilizer is originally derived from natural gas, or
methane, and natural gas prices have been rising steadily this year. The
second: Corn cultivation requires oodles of nitrogen, and the acreage of
farmland devoted to corn in the U.S. this year has jumped dramatically. When
the cost of production of a commodity and the demand for it rise at the same
time, you've got trouble.
Irony No. 1: As we are all well aware, the increase in corn production is
directly connected to government mandates that are, at least theoretically,
designed to decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil. So a policy designed to
reduce consumption of one fossil fuel -- oil -- is resulting in increased
demand for another -- natural gas.
Irony No. 2: One of the best natural sources of nitrogen are legumes --
plants that can "fix" the nitrogen so abundant in the atmosphere and add it
to the soil. Soybeans are legumes, which is one reason why American farmers
have traditionally been fond of alternating corn and soybeans year after
year in the same fields. But this year, soybean acreage is plummeting, as
farmers replant corn in the same fields where it grew the previous year, and
otherwise switch away from soybeans altogether, lured by the irresistible
seduction of $4-a-bushel corn.
Irony No. 3: Another excellent natural source of nitrogen is chicken shit.
But chicken shit is also becoming scarce in some regions of the U.S. due in
part to its popularity with organic farmers.
Moral of the story? Next time the chickens come home to roost, don't waste
any time collecting their excrement. There's a bright future in chicken
poop.
milk today comes from what can only be considered "factory" dairy
feedlots -- and much of Aurora's organic milk does as well. Rather than buy
organic calves that have been raised from birth on organic farms, these
companies seemed to have discovered it's cheaper to buy conventional calves
that have been raised on conventional farms, install them in factory
feedlots, then milk them and call it organic.
Catastrophic Bee Colony Collapse is Not Affecting Organic Hives
As previously reported in Organic Bytes (Issue #104), beekeepers in 24
states are experiencing record losses of honeybees. Some states have
reported up to 70% disappearances of commercial bee populations. Researchers
are struggling to find the causes of this mysterious collapse.
A crucial element of this story, missing from reports in the mainstream
media, is the fact that organic beekeepers across North America are not
experiencing colony collapses. The millions of dying bees are hyper-bred
varieties whose hives are regularly fumigated with toxic pesticides by
conventional beekeepers attempting to ward off mites.
In contrast, organic beekeepers avoid pesticides and toxic chemicals and
strive to use techniques that closely emulate the ecology of bees in the
wild. Researchers are beginning to link the mass deaths of non-organic bees
to pesticide exposure, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and the common
practice of moving conventional bee hives over long distances
New research presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual
convention in Toronto last week indicates that 100% pure fruit juice does
not add to childhood obesity and may actually help children maintain healthy
weight. In the their study, researchers analyzed the juice consumption of 3,618
children ages 2 to 11 using data from the National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey. Increased risk for obesity was linked to beverages that
contained artificial sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup, which makes
up the vast majority of beverages on the market (note: most high fructose
corn syrup is made from genetically engineered corn). "The bottom line is
that 100 percent juice consumption is a valuable contributor of nutrients in
children's diet and it does not have an association with being overweight,"
said study chief Dr. Theresa Nicklas.
