Happy Birthday Rob! Live Long and Prosper
Alzheimer's News Website: An adult's diet has a direct impact on the risks of developing Alzheimer's disease at an advanced age, a recent study suggests. Eating foods high in fat increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's, while sticking to a diet high in vegetables will diminish the chance of developing the degenerative memory illness.

Lithium protects elderly bipolar patients against Alzheimer's disease
Elderly patients with bipolar disorder are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease if they are taking lithium, study findings show. Source: Br J Psychiatry 2007; 190: 359-360
- Eliminate refined sugar and refined carbohydrates from your diet -- especially if you have Type II diabetes in your family or if you are insulin resistant.
- Keep your homocysteine levels down by taking B-complex vitamins and/or a multiple vitamin containing vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid.
- Take 1 Tbsp of fish oil per day. This natural anti-inflammatory contains omega-3 fatty acids that help repair brain cell membranes.
- Consider using bio-identical hormones to maintain adequate levels of estrogen or testosterone. Refer to the September 2002 issue of Nutrition & Healing for more information on bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.
- Research shows that the mineral lithium has strong potential to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

The Food and Drug Administration said it approved Letairis (ambrisentan) to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The condition causes continuous high blood pressure in the arteries that carry oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs. As the arteries narrow, the heart must pump harder, which weakens it with time. The disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States.
The drug comes with strong warnings as it may cause birth defects and shouldn't be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. It also can cause liver damage. Patients taking the once-daily tablets must undergo monthly blood tests to check for injury to the liver, the FDA said. (AP)
Drinking a milkshake-style medicine at breakfast seems to feed brain cells starved from Alzheimer's damage, researchers reported Monday. It's one of four promising experimental drugs poised for large-scale testing against the brain-destroying disease. The milkshake drug, called Ketasyn, is a dramatically different way to approach dementia. It hinges on recent research suggesting diabetic-like changes in brain cells' ability to use sugar for energy play a role in at least some forms of Alzheimer's. WASHINGTON (AP)
U.S. researchers say antioxidants may reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapy. The report, which is to be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago next week, said antioxidants may improve survival rates and tumor response by helping patients complete prescribed treatment cycles, The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment said Friday in a release. In 18 of 30 studies evaluated, patients who received oral or intravenous antioxidant supplements experienced significantly lower toxicity. The report said glutathione, melatonin and vitamin E showed the most consistent and promising effects. Vitamin A was the only antioxidant that showed significantly greater toxicity. Dr. Keith I. Block, co-founder and medical/scientific director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment, was the lead author. Robert Newman, Professor of Cancer Medicine at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, co-wrote the report.

Study: Vitamin D may cut the risk of several types of cancer by 60 percent overall for older women. The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight's ultraviolet rays. This study used that same form of the vitamin, known as D3 or cholecalciferol. Multivitamins usually carry a much weaker variant known as D2, but D3 is available in stand-alone dietary supplements.
Dietary Sources of Vitamin D (mcg)
Cod liver oil, 1 Tbl - 34.0
Pacific oysters, 3.5 oz - 16.0
Most fish, 3.5 oz - 8.0
Vitamin D fortified milk - 2.45
Egg, cooked - 0.65
Beef, 3.5 oz - 0.18
Yogurt, 1 cup - 0.10
Cheddar cheese, 1 oz - 0.09
Study: Sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA. This could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's.
When a UK professor of molecular biology and biotechnology tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells, he discovered that it was damaging important DNA in the cells' mitochondria.
Mitochondria serve as the "power stations" for cells, and damage to them can lead to serious cell malfunctions associated with aging and age-related disease. The damage caused by sodium benzoate was great enough to cause the mitochondria to stop functioning.
Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in berries in small amounts, but is used in large quantities to prevent mold in soft drinks such as Sprite, Diet Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

Paxil Birth Defects: Recent studies suggest an increased risk of Paxil birth defects for pregnant women during their first trimester. According to the results of two studies, women who were taking Paxil during the first three months of pregnancy were one and a half to two times more likely to have a baby with heart malformations than women on other antidepressants or women in the general population.
The diabetes drugs Actos and Avandia will soon carry a "black box" warning that the drug may trigger heart failure.
The FDA and drug company GlaxoSmithKline are alerting doctors about reports of new or worsening diabetic eye complications in patients with diabetes taking the drugs Avandia or Avandamet
